South Bay 2019‐20 Rehearsal Director and Musicianship Instructor:

Apprentice, Junior & Prep Choruses (Levels III, II, I)

Location and hours: 225 Tilton Ave., San Mateo, CA Mondays 3:30 ‐ 6 PM
Wednesdays 4:00 ‐ 6 PM (Last Wed start time 3:45)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Rehearsal Director & Musicianship Instructor conducts the Apprentice Chorus (grades 2‐4) and Prep/Junior Chorus (grades K‐1) rehearsals at SFBC’s San Mateo site from August 28, 2019 through early June 2020. Possible summer camp employment opportunities. Reports to Music Education Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1.
Plan and execute rehearsals and musicianship classes in coordination with and under the auspices of the San Francisco‐site chorus directors.

2. Program Delivery:
-Engage, motivate and challenge choristers in their choral singing and expected performance practices; foster chorus social and professional culture according to SFBC standards.
-Include in rehearsals music literacy techniques utilizing moveable do, Curwen hand signs, solfa and rhythm syllables, and level‐appropriate instruction in score reading.
- Instruct choristers in proper use of head voice and healthy vocalization through activities, games, and choral repertoire.
-Teach musicianship (sight singing and theory) under the auspices of the Music Education Director and using the SFBC curriculum.
- Help ensure chorister on‐site safety and security. Ensure
that the rehearsal facility is used according to SFBC agreement.
- Support the choristers at performances throughout the year as scheduled and conduct some performances TBD. Represent SFBC at various public functions as needed.

3. Evaluation

  •  Complete and ensure the timely distribution of chorister mid‐year and year‐end assessments.

  •  Work closely with SFBC faculty and Music Education Director to prepare choristers for promotion into the next chorus level.
    - Participate in employment and program evaluation at the end of the year.

    Administrative Responsibilities:

4. Communicate with parents regarding behavior, attendance and achievement, and develop behavior management plans with parents as needed.
- Take attendance/roll call at all rehearsals and enter weekly into SFBC database. Ensure the Music Education Director is immediately informed of attendees not on the register.

  •  Contribute to each SF‐site Director’s monthly news email to families.

  •  Attend twice‐annual staff professional development workshops; attend once‐monthly music faculty meetings (usually the fourth Monday, 7:00 p.m.); and thrice annual new chorister auditions.

    QUALIFICATIONS

-Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Music preferably with an emphasis in education and/or early childhood development and experience with the Kodály method.

  •  Interest and desire in working with children and developing their musical aptitude.

  •  Two or more years of work experience similar to this position. Proven record of classroom management that motivates and encourages young singers.

- Choral conducting experience and/or training and familiarity with choral repertoire and an understanding of vocal development in children.

  •  Ability to work as a team player with a flexible and positive attitude.

  •  Ability to play the piano is preferred, but not required.

    COMPENSATION

    Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
