School-Based Teaching Artist (Choir) and Vocal Coach (Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir)

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The award-winning Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir (PEBCC) seeks dynamic, collaborative, and organized Teaching Artists for elementary choirs after school on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:45 - 4:15 pm from October 13, 2021 - late May 2022.

We also seek an elementary vocal coach to work 1:1 in person in short voice lessons for our community programming in Piedmont on Tuesdays from 4-6 pm, now through late May 2022.

The ideal candidate(s) is/are passionate about empowering young people through music education, building community, and affirming students’ cultural identities.

You will partner closely with students, on-site school personnel, and PEBCC staff, teaching vocal/choral music to elementary-age children at after-school settings in Oakland, Piedmont, and/or Alameda. Lessons focus on developing musical skills, nurturing a diverse community of learners, and supporting student learning across disciplines. We seek instructors with strong backgrounds in music education, vocal training, and effective classroom management. You are skilled at affirming, engaging, and supporting young people from diverse East Bay communities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach vocal and choral music to elementary-age children in alignment with PEBCC’s Kodály and Orff-based curriculum.
Attend regular staff meetings and trainings as required (limited).
Form relationships with principals, parents, and students through participation in on-site performances and events.
Prepare students for PEBCC concerts and events.
Conduct singers on December and May/June PEBCC concerts, and supervise elementary singers during the performance.
Administer evaluation tools, T-shirts, PEBCC information, and advocacy efforts as part of PEBCC initiatives.
Collaborate with admin and Program staff to ensure strong school/organizational partnerships.
Complete timecards and other administrative paperwork in a timely fashion.


NEEDED QUALIFICATIONS:
Proven ability to teach K-5th grade children in small or large group settings (up to 25 students).
Strong vocal training and/or choral directing abilities.
Strong classroom management and student engagement skills in a variety of settings.
Dedication to working with and supporting diverse students.
Passion for PEBCC’s mission and for music education.
Reliable transportation to school sites.
Pass OUSD 1A requirements, negative TB test, and PEBCC livescan; fully vaccinated against COVID-19 for in person work.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
Certification in Kodaly, Orff and/or other music education methodologies preferred, willingness to incorporate them with PEBCC training necessary.
Undergraduate work in music education and/or credential program.
3 years of similar instruction within a school or community setting
Understanding of school cultures and systems

REPORTS TO: Artistic Director.

HOURS: Part-time, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons 2:45 - 4 pm. Occasional weekend or evening recitals, workshops, or rehearsals. Vocal Coach Tuesday afternoons 4-6 pm. This is a non-exempt, hourly position. We will consider more than one hire.
