Part-Time Teaching Artist (Cantare con Vivo)
Cantare seeks to foster a diverse community of compassion and understanding across generational, cultural, and economic boundaries, through the beauty and power of choral music. Cantare’s Classroom Music Education program provides tuition-free choral music residencies to over 3,000 students weekly in underserved Oakland schools.
Cantare is seeking a dynamic, experienced music teacher to join our team of professional Teaching Artists, working with lower elementary grades (TK-2nd) during the school day, in general music lessons.
Hours:
● Ten 35-min lessons conducted weekly for TK-2 nd graders at one Oakland school
● Possibility of additional work with after-school choir
● End-of-year culmination performances (format and dates TBD)
● Professional development sessions and staff meetings (dates/time upon agreement)
Job Duties:
● Prepare and teach weekly lessons
● Build relationship with students by engaging school staff and its community
● Organize performances at school events, in collaboration with Cantare as well as school staff
● Represent Cantare with high standards of professionalism and punctuality
● Complete timesheets, administrative paperwork, student evaluations on time
Qualifications:
● B.A. or equivalent in music field
● Experience in Kodály or Orff music education preferred
● A commitment to artistic and educational excellence
● Comfortable teaching materials from diverse traditions
● Healthy vocal technique
● Encouraging, compassionate, and effective classroom management skills
● Experience working with elementary-aged students in economically disadvantaged communities is a plus
● Bilingual skills are a plus
Start Date: Aug 15, 2022. Teaching Artists enter an employment contract with Cantare until the end of the school year in May 2023.
Compensation:
● $46.60 - $55.10 per in-school lesson, commensurate with experience.
● Flat fee of $84.00/performance during school hours
● Flat fee of $110.25/performance evening and weekend
● $25/hr for Professional Development
Professional development opportunities are included, along with a budget for supplies, equipment, and access to libraries of music and materials. Teaching Artists receive support from Cantare’s artistic and administrative staff.
