Middle School Music Teacher (2024-25), The Hamlin School

Requirements: Master’s Degree or equivalent in teaching; music education degree preferred; strong choral conducting experience and proficient piano skills highly desired

Reports to:  Middle School Division Head

Primary Responsibilities: Teach music classes to Grades 5-8; conduct chorus for Grades 4-8 in collaboration with the Lower School music teacher; serve as an advisor to Middle School students; collaborate and co-create lesson plans with colleagues to design experiences for students; communicate and partner with parents and grade-level teams through advisory program

Hours/Classification: Full-Time, Exempt

Salary Range: $75,000-$125,000 Annually (Salaries are based on years of experience)

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, articulate, and implement Middle School Music Program for a range of learners in Grades 5-8 (Teach general music education for Grades 5 and 6; fall music elective for Grade 7; and spring musical for Grade 8)

  • Collaborate with Lower School music teacher to lead Red & Gold Choruses for Grades 4-8

  • Lead musical performances for elective music classes for parents/guardians and the larger school community, including daytime and some evening performances (and possibly national conferences, such as the National Association of Independent Schools)

  • Work in partnership with the Head of School to oversee and choose the music for major school events: Learn About Hamlin; State of the School; Graduation

  • Co-lead the Grade 8 spring musical capstone project as the music director

  • Lead an advisory group of 9 -12 students

  • Design lessons which model creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking

  • Draw on multiple musical genres and a wide range of cultures to guide instruction

  • Identify materials, resources, and technology needs for program

  • Include use of appropriate technology tools and resources for instruction

  • Create and update class web pages

  • Communicate with parents about the Middle School music program

  • Attend collaborative discussions and sharing of student concerns

  • Actively participate in division meetings, admissions, and other school events

  • Pursue relevant opportunities for professional growth and development

  • Evaluate students on a trimester and/or semester schedule with written report cards

  • Supervise students in other venues such as recess, lunch, field trips, outdoor education, etc.

  • Participate in an outdoor education trip for 3-4 nights (additional stipend paid)

  • Provide 1:1/small-group student learning support during flex time and other parts of the school day

  • Perform other duties consistent with the above responsibilities
