CHORAL DIRECTOR positions with the San Francisco Boys Chorus to begin January 1, 2019

(Two positions. May be filled by one candidate.)

 Preparatory and Junior Chorus Rehearsal Director Mondays 3:15 – 4:30 PM San Mateo location. (Potential Apprentice Chorus Musicianship class would extend time to 5:00 PM.)

 Junior Chorus Director & Apprentice Chorus Musicianship Instructor Wednesdays 4-6 PM San Francisco location.

SUMMARY:

Prep and Junior Chorus Director San Mateo (Mondays) The successful candidate is a team player and a self-directed and organized individual familiar and comfortable using Kodály-inspired methods and moveable do. The San Mateo Preps and Junior Choruses (K and 1st graders) rehearse together as one group on Mondays followed by a dedicated musicianship class for the Juniors alone. The San Mateo rehearsal site is growing and the number of boys to audition in January 2019 may require that we add an Apprentice Chorus musicianship class TBD.

Junior Chorus Director and Apprentice Chorus Musicianship Instructor San Francisco (Wednesdays) The successful candidate is a team player and a self-directed and organized individual familiar and comfortable using Kodály-inspired methods and moveable do. The schedule includes the SF Junior Chorus rehearsals and dedicated musicianship class and one Apprentice Chorus musicianship class on Wednesdays each week. Musicianship lessons are provided in the SFBC curriculum.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning:

 Plan rehearsals and musicianship lessons for the Junior Chorus and musicianship lesesons for the Apprentice Chorus. Use Kodály inspired methods and techniques. Curriculum provided by SFBC.

 Collaborate with the Music Education Director to:

o Establish goals and objectives for the Junior Chorus program consistent with SFBC expectations.

o Select appropriate repertoire that promotes healthy vocal development, chosen from diverse backgrounds, origins and traditions.

Program Delivery:

 Conduct the Preparatory and/or Junior Chorus in once-weekly rehearsals and theory classes. A rehearsal accompanist will be provided.

 Preparatory Chorus classroom and concert repertoire will be provided by Music Education Director.

 Educate choristers on the proper use of head voice through activities, games, and appropriate choral repertoire and teach expected chorister behaviors.

 Embed music literacy skill development in the choral rehearsal.

 Conduct the Junior Chorus in the Spring and Winter concerts plus 1-2 outreach performances or activities throughout the semester.

 Help ensure chorister on-site safety and security.

Evaluation

 Complete and ensure the timely distribution of mid-year chorister musicianship and voice evaluations to submit to the MED.

 Work closely with MED to evaluate and prepare choristers for promotion into the next performance group.

 Participate in employment review at the end of each academic year. Contribute to the chorus program evaluation at the end of each academic year.

Administrative Responsibilities:

 Communicate with parents regarding chorister behavior, attendance and achievement issues. If necessary, meet with parents, MED and/or Program Manager to determine needed disciplinary actions.

 Attend music faculty meetings (two Monday evenings per semester), two SFBC professional development meetings (August and January), and thrice annual new chorister auditions on Saturdays (January, May, and September.)

 Inform and supply satellite site rehearsal directors with Junior Chorus repertoire and performance details and musicianship materials.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Bachelor’s Degree in Music, preferably with an emphasis in education and/or early childhood music development. Experience with the Kodály method, Master’s degree or Certificates in Kodály methods preferred.

 Is a dynamic teacher able to engage and motivate young singers to the highest standards of artistic excellence as well as interest and desire to work with children and develop their musical aptitude.

 3-5 years of elementary classroom music or choral music teaching experience with children as well as knowledge of vocal pedagogy, choral diction, and languages.

 Familiarity with choral repertoire and vocal development in children.

 Ability to work as a team player.

 Proven record of discipline techniques that motivate and encourage young singers.

 Functional piano skills are preferred.

COMPENSATION

Commensurate with experience, qualifications and SFBC policies, hourly wages are paid for planning, teaching and performing time and meetings.
