From movement to body percussion, from singing to Orff arrangement, Melanie Kang seeks to make Chinese music, dances, and activities accessible to American teachers and students while simultaneously preserving the authenticity of the culture. In this workshop, Melanie will not only share songs and games she has collected in her recently published book Lion, Lanterns, and Ribbons, she will also bring other Chinese traditional stories, artwork, folk dances, and children’s games that she has explored and tested with her students over the span of a decade. In her class, the traditional Chinese fan dance become Curwen hands signs and the traditional ribbons dance become the explorations of the music expressions. After this workshop in Chinese music, you will be able to throw a Lunar New Year celebration while enhancing your students’ creativity and musical capabilities.
Melanie Kang was raised and educated in the rich traditional music and culture in Xi’an, China. She graduated from Xi’an Music Conservatory with bachelor’s in music in 1996; graduate from School of Music, University of Utah with master’s in music in 2003. Over the past 20 years, she has collected and explored many of her own childhood songs, games, and folk dances to use in her American music classroom. In her years of teaching, she has made Chinese music and dances accessible for American teachers by bringing authentic elements of traditional Chinese music to a modern, creative Orff and Kodaly approach.
This workshop will be recorded and made available online. All in-person participants must print/sign the Media Release Form, and return it at the start of the workshop. Paper copies will be available if you forget to bring your signed copy. If you have turned in a copy for the 2023-24 workshop season, you need not submit another.
