Live Oak Charter School, a Waldorf Inspired K-8 school in Petaluma, California is conducting a national search for a Music Teacher/Director to lead our established music program emphasizing voice and strings.
A joyful and intriguing learning experience is the fundamental goal of Live Oak’s program. Our vision is to be the model school for music instruction in the North Bay: Providing a solid foundation in technique and theory through exploration of music’s diverse artistic heritage. Though content knowledge and proficiency are important
objectives of the program, the creation of an affirming and buoyant musical experience for children is essential. It is the vitality and joy of the personal experience that develops the internal inspiration within children to persevere and progress in comprehension, skill, and expression.
The Music Teacher is responsible for instruction in voice/choir and strings (violin, viola, cello, bass). Classes begin in the early grades with voice work primarily, hybridizing with strings instruments in grades 3-8. Classes are held in both half-size and full-size configurations to provide periods for targeted instruction as well as periods for larger choir and orchestral training. A music assistant joins the music teacher to support full-size class instruction.
Ideal candidates are Kodály trained and employ an engaging repertoire of classical, folk and modern music from around the world. A successful candidate develops a positive, professional, and gracefully playful rapport with students. The capacity to creatively meet children throughout the grades with challenging and relevant material is a must. Experience in a Waldorf environment is appreciated, though not required.
This is unique opportunity to work in a community that is deeply invested in providing exceptional music instruction for our students. We believe that musical expression is an innate component of our humanity and want our students to have an elementary music experience that cultivates a passion and understanding of this art form. Live Oak provides an inventory of quality instruments and has relationships with our local music shops to maintain and replace instruments regularly.
The Music teacher is part of an interleaved system of music instruction and is joined by a dedicated percussion teacher in grades 4-8. In addition, all classroom teachers at the school are musicians themselves, and are responsible for recorder and vocal instruction in the classroom for curriculum integration and cultivation of harmonious and rhythmic group dynamics.
