POSITION SUMMARY:
The Preparatory Chorus is a program to encourage enthusiasm and appreciation for singing and chorus for K‐1 boys. Prep rehearsals are 40 minutes each and consist of music and singing games to develop musicianship and cooperation skills and a short choral rehearsal segment.
The SF‐site Preparatory Chorus (Level I) Director, and Junior and Apprentice Chorus Theory Instructor
will join the SFBC Music Faculty starting September 2018. The successful candidate is a self‐directed and
organized individual who will conduct rehearsals and classes to achieve the goals, mission and vision of
SFBC. This director will facilitate development of the Preparatory chorister’s musicianship readiness
skills to sing expressively in head voice and to learn cooperation and focus in rehearsal.
HOURS: Monday 4‐5:15 pm and Wednesday 4‐6 pm, San Francisco site (44 Page St.)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Planning:
Develop the yearlong Preparatory program, utilizing music games and repertoire that will
prepare choristers for their next level in SFBC.
-Work with SFBC faculty and the Junior Chorus director to foster collaboration consistent with
SFBC Chorus expectations.
Prepare theory lessons using the SFBC curriculum. Collaborate planning with Junior and
Apprentice Chorus directors.
2. Program Delivery:
Preparatory Chorus. Two sections of Preps, forty minutes each, one on Monday and one on
Wednesday.
Educate choristers on the proper use of head voice through activities, games, and
appropriate repertoire and teach expected chorister behaviors.
Embed music literacy readiness skill development in the Prep rehearsal.
Performances: One to two outreach performances seasonally (e.g. retirement home);
massed choir piece on both Winter and Spring Concerts; one piece with Junior Chorus in
the Spring.
Theory Classes. Junior class – 25 minutes on Wednesdays; Apprentice class ‐ 30 minutes twice
per week.
Help ensure chorister on‐site safety and security.
3. Evaluation
Complete and ensure the timely distribution of mid‐year Prep Chorister overall evaluations and
Junior and Apprentice Chorus musicianship evaluations.
Contribute to final program and employment evaluation at the end of the academic year.
Work closely with the Junior Chorus and Education Directors to prepare boys for audition into
the next performance group.
4. Administrative Responsibilities:
Record chorister attendance weekly and notify the Music Education Director immediately of any
boys attending who are not on the register.
Communicate student progress and goals with parents. Prepare and send monthly Prep Chorus
letter to all‐site Prep parents, using input from all‐site Prep Directors. (This responsibility may be
divided among all‐site Prep Directors with your oversight.)
Attend once‐monthly music faculty meetings (usually the fourth Monday at 7:00.); thrice‐annual
chorus auditions on Saturdays; and twice‐annual staff professional development workshops.
Communicate and coordinate Prep lesson plans and repertoire with all‐site Prep Directors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in Music, preferably with an emphasis in education and/or early childhood
music development. Experienced and trained in the Kodály methods, master’s degree or Summer
Certification Levels work preferred. Knowledge of a variety of music education methods is a plus.
Minimum of 3‐5 years of experience in a music education setting with PreK‐2 students.
Is a dynamic teacher who is able to engage and motivate young singers to the highest standards
of vocal and artistic excellence.
Ability to work as a team player.
Proven record of discipline techniques that motivate and encourage young singers.
Functional piano skills are preferred.
