Position Purpose: The lower school music teacher is responsible for all aspects of creating a dynamic learning environment for students in weekly music classes, grades first through fifth.
Specific Expectations for P-8 Employees:
In addition to regular teaching responsibilities (including but not limited to preparing curriculum and grade reporting, class prep, student reporting report card narratives, parent-teacher conferences, supervision duties, classroom substitution, advisory, elective teaching, office hours, outdoor education/field trips, etc.), the following duties and responsibilities are required as part of the P-8 faculty/staff workload:
Responsibilities beyond the boundaries of teaching assignments that foster a growth mindset in order to continually improve our P-8 program such as professional development and trainings, attendance of or participation in, mandatory meetings and/or events (Directors Days, Open Houses, accreditation meetings, etc.) are required as directed by your supervisor. All employees will be paid appropriately and according to current law. If staff are required to work outside of regular work schedule; non-exempt employees will receive overtime pay, as eligible.
Essential Functions
Responsible for teaching general music for grades 1-5
Plans daily classroom work based on curriculum requirements
Works with the department head in regards to planning, evaluating, and revising curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction
Instructs students in rhythm work, ear training, music theory and music appreciation
Leads students in regular and special performances for school program, community activities, and concerts
Creates an exciting and fun learning environment; Promotes students lifelong love of music
Prepares course materials such as course outline and description, and other assignments
Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
Assesses and grades students
Responsible for other faculty duties and student supervision
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree or post graduate work in music or music education
Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching music to elementary age students
Demonstrated skills as musician and teacher and a passion for teaching young students music and movement
Commitment to equity and inclusion
Curating developmentally appropriate classroom materials and repertoire and creating engaging lessons using those materials
Ability to clearly communicate and work effectively with vendors, parents, colleagues and children
Willing to be an active, enthusiastic member of the SHS community
Demonstrated ability to relate to children in a positive manner and create a safe and inclusive learning environment
Collaborative spirit and collegial nature to support a positive working relationship with the fine arts department
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Kodaly or Orff Certified teachers encouraged to apply
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Works in a highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts
Must comply with all state vaccination requirements and show proof of vaccination including but not limited to COVID-19 or proof of eligibility for exemption
Must be able to regularly move safely and comfortably over a 64 acre campus
May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
Be able to regularly lift up to 10lbs and on occasion, safely lift up to 30 lbs
Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled office environment and outside in weather ranging from cold and wet to very warm (80+ degrees)
