Position Summary
The Instructor of Voice and Theory is the primary teacher responsible for grade classes of the boy choristers (3rd through 8th grades). Under the direction of the Choirmaster, they develop and implement the curriculum necessary for the success of the choir program, working both with Grace Cathedral and with Cathedral School for Boys.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
• Plan, teach, and evaluate students in grade classes (Monday-Friday, around 3 classes per day)
• Develop necessary handouts, activities, and other classroom materials
• Attend and assist in morning full-group rehearsals, and Thursday Evensong services
• Collaborate with Music Team to refine curriculum, evaluate students, monitor the efficacy of the program, and make placement decisions regarding probationary choristers
• Communicate with parents of students both formally (through progress reports, report cards, and conferences) and informally (through emails and phone calls as needed)
• Represent the Music Department at Cathedral School for Boys faculty meetings
Qualifications & Skills
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Music Education or related field
• Experience with vocal pedagogy (including both young and changing voices), moveable-do solfege and Curwin hand signs, the Kodály method, and choral techniques
• Ability and enthusiasm to work with various grade levels in an all-boys environment, adjusting classroom techniques to fit differing ages and learning styles
• Basic keyboard skills (giving pitches, accurately playing a melody)
• Knowledge of English and Latin diction (any other languages a plus), and familiarity with the International Phonetic Alphabet
• Be qualified to work in the United States, and pass a criminal background check
