Ragazzi Boys Chorus (www.ragazzi.org), the San Francisco Bay Area’s largest choral organization for boys, seeks an inspired and vibrant Primary Group Chorus Director (PGCD) to lead one of three entry-level choruses on Wednesday evenings from 5:00-7:40p.

Ragazzi begins its 35th season under the artistic and administrative leadership of Kent Jue. We provide exceptional educational and performance opportunities for boys in the art of choral singing. Our thriving organization serves over 175 boys and young men, ages 5–18, from over 100 schools and 30 cities. Boys progress through six-tiered ensembles as they achieve musical and developmental benchmarks. We empower our choristers to create positive change in their communities and develop young men of character and distinction. Ragazzi produces its own concert series and regularly collaborates with such ensembles as the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, Symphony Silicon Valley, and Opera San Jose. Ragazzi is supported by 14 teaching artists and six administrators. Our robust program includes a comprehensive theory program, a sleep-away camp, and annual tours.

Each Primary Group comprises approximately 16-20 entry-level boys in grades 1-4. Reporting to the Coordinator of Training Ensembles, the PGCD designs the curriculum for their class and delivers rehearsal instruction preparing boys for performances in collaboration with the other directors. The PGCD oversees boys’ fulfillment of placement requirements for the next level, including their progress through the Ragazzi Theory Program as separately taught by the Theory Director.

In addition, the PGCD:

● Plans and conducts rehearsals that include vocal technique, sight-reading with moveable do, theory, performance practice, and repertoire (collaborative pianist provided)

● Develops and fosters a structured, nurturing, and joyful environment that creates enthusiasm for singing, the ensemble, and the Ragazzi program

● Communicates the Ragazzi philosophy clearly and effectively to boys and families, laying the groundwork for higher levels of commitment to the program

● Sends formal and informal evaluations, keeping boys and families abreast of progress

Strong candidates will possess the following preferred qualifications:

● Bachelor’s degree in music education, choral conducting, or music performance, or the equivalent

● Strong knowledge of vocal production and choral technique

● Exemplary musicianship and teaching skills

● Kodály training with successful teaching application

● Three years of experience teaching choral music to children

Primary Group calendar:

● Other performances by mutual agreement ($150 per gig)

Compensation: $7400 per year, $500 professional development (ACDA) stipend, one professional service rehearsal coverage per semester, and sick time accrual. This is a part-time job. Other benefits are not offered.

Responsibilities:

● Design, articulate, and implement Lower School Music Program program for a range of learners in Kindergarten- Grade 4

● Collaborate with Middle School Music Teacher to lead Red/Gold Chorus Grades 4-8

● Collaborate with homeroom and other specialist teachers to integrate music instruction in other curricular areas

● Lead musical performances annually for each grade level for parents/guardians and the larger school community

● Design lessons which model 21st century skills

● Able to draw on multiple musical genres and cultures to guide instruction

Instructor of Voice & Theory (Grace Cathedral)

Position Summary

The Instructor of Voice and Theory is the primary teacher responsible for grade classes of the boy choristers (3rd through 8th grades). Under the direction of the Choirmaster, they develop and implement the curriculum necessary for the success of the choir program, working both with Grace Cathedral and with Cathedral School for Boys.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, teach, and evaluate students in grade classes (Monday-Friday, around 3 classes per day)

• Develop necessary handouts, activities, and other classroom materials

• Attend and assist in morning full-group rehearsals, and Thursday Evensong services

• Collaborate with Music Team to refine curriculum, evaluate students, monitor the efficacy of the program, and make placement decisions regarding probationary choristers

• Communicate with parents of students both formally (through progress reports, report cards, and conferences) and informally (through emails and phone calls as needed)

• Represent the Music Department at Cathedral School for Boys faculty meetings

Qualifications & Skills

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Music Education or related field

• Experience with vocal pedagogy (including both young and changing voices), moveable-do solfege and Curwin hand signs, the Kodály method, and choral techniques

• Ability and enthusiasm to work with various grade levels in an all-boys environment, adjusting classroom techniques to fit differing ages and learning styles

• Basic keyboard skills (giving pitches, accurately playing a melody)

• Knowledge of English and Latin diction (any other languages a plus), and familiarity with the International Phonetic Alphabet

• Be qualified to work in the United States, and pass a criminal background check

Position Purpose: The lower school music teacher is responsible for all aspects of creating a dynamic learning environment for students in weekly music classes, grades first through fifth.

Specific Expectations for P-8 Employees:

Prelude Chorus Director (Young Women's Choral Projects)

The Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco (YWCP) is seeking a choral music educator for its beginning training ensemble, Prelude Chorus, starting in September 2022.

Through a Kodály-based music literacy program, young women in Prelude Chorus (grades 2-6) receive vocal and musical training, including music theory and ear training, sight-reading, vocal technique, and choral performance skills. Prelude Chorus is the beginning level of auditioned training choirs in YWCP. A young singer is auditioned, but needs no prior music training to join Prelude Chorus. In this ensemble, choristers learn repertoire in multiple languages, in unison and two-parts, as well as folk dances and other music games. Prelude Chorus meets twice a week, Wednesdays from 4-6 and Sundays from 4-5:30. They perform approximately five public performances a year.

The Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco, founded by Dr. Susan McMane in 2012, is recognized as a world-class choral organization for young women. YWCP has six levels of choral experience for young women ages 4-18 from across the San Francisco Bay Area. The mission of YWCP is to transform the lives of young women through exceptional artistry in choral performance, and bring the expressive power of their music to the community, the nation, and the world. Through YWCP, participants of richly diverse socio-ethnic backgrounds find their voices as singers, artists, and women in a nurturing environment that empowers them to achieve artistic and personal excellence.

• Job includes selecting repertoire, creating lesson plans, conducting rehearsals, teaching sightreading with solfeggio (moveable Do), distributing and collecting sheet music, writing evaluations, and emailing parents about chorister’s progress and absences if needed. Monthly meetings with other faculty are expected.

• Evaluate choristers and distribute written evaluations to families twice each year, in December and June.

• Salary Range: $14,000 – $16,000 (commensurate with experience)

• Employment is for the academic year of September 2022 – June 2023, which includes 2 concerts and 3 shorter recitals as well as auditions in January and May/June. Cantabella Children’s Chorus (CCC) is an award-winning mixed voice chorus serving close to two hundred children and youth in the Livermore Tri-Valley of the San Francisco Bay Area. Its mission is to develop music literacy, healthy vocal technique, choral artistry through excellence in music education, exceptional choral productions, and collaborative cultural arts experiences to enrich our diverse community.  Under the leadership of our current Artistic Director, Eileen Chang, CCC has participated in prestigious festivals and competitions, such as: ACDA Regional Conference,  World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Kathawmixw Choral Festival in Canada, Golden Gate International Choral Festival,  PicFest, and Sing A Mile High.

In the summer of 2019, CCC was invited to the 2019 World Youth Choral Festival and Competition (WYCF) in the beautiful Jeju Island of South Korea. Cantabella won Gold medals for both Sacred and Secular Categories and proudly came back home with the Grand Prix.

We are in a unique position of hiring a new Artistic Director (AD) while restarting in-person rehearsals and performances after more than a year of off-site zoom rehearsals due to COVID-19. Artistic Responsibilities | MUSIC

●      Plan for and oversee the successes of 2 major concerts a year: the annual holiday concert and a spring concert.

●      Choose and/or approve Choral Repertoire and Programs for the concerts for all CCC choirs (performing choirs, training choirs).      

●      Plan and lead approximately 33-36 weekly rehearsals for 2 of the 3 performing choirs, from the end of August through the end of May, and conduct their performances. Currently the rehearsals are 2.5 hours for the Honors Choir, and 2.0 hours for the Chamber Choir. 

●      Plan for smaller concert performances at local corporate, civic functions and churches, using select choirs from CCC. Outreach may also be planned in collaboration with other musical organizations within the community.

●      Research and recommend international travel every other year for Cantabella performing choirs to participate in summer choral festivals /competition. Domestic travel for alternate years.

●      Plan and schedule summer workshops and camps as needed.

●      Manage Musical Staff and Guest Musicians. You will recruit and hire all musical staff, set pay and duties of each staff in collaboration with the Board. These positions have historically included associate directors for the training choirs, and any performing choirs you are not directing, music theory instructors, vocal coaches, accompanists, guest instrumentalists for concerts.

Artistic Responsibilities | MEMBERSHIP

●      Community building. Choristers return to CCC every season in large part because of the strong community ties that have developed over the years. As the leader of CCC, you will take an active role in setting the tone for the kind of community we are known for: nondiscriminatory, supportive, respectful and always striving for excellence.

●      Audition Members. Plan and run auditions at the beginning of each season, and as you deem necessary.

Administrative Responsibilities

As the AD, your primary work will be focused on music. But you, along with the Board, will also be involved in many of the administrative aspects of keeping CCC running smoothly:

●      Budget Planning. Work with the CCC Board to plan the organization-wide budget for each season and work to stay within the planned budget.

●      Marketing & Media. Work with the CCC Board to plan advertising and marketing strategies for individual concerts and CCC’s overall enrollment. Provide guidance and content for the CCC’s online presence.

●      Choral Conducting skills and experience required.

Dolce Singers Director (Young Women's Choral Project)

Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco (YWCP) is seeking a choral music educator for its introductory level singing class, Dolce Singers, starting in September 2021. Through a Kodály-based curriculum, young girls in Dolce Singers (ages 4-6) build basic musicianship skills and vocal technique while actively engaging their minds, bodies and voices in folk songs and dances, music games, simple percussion playing and age-appropriate unison choral music. Dolce Singers is a non-auditioned class that meets once a week on Tuesdays from 4-4:45pm in San Francisco, performs for parents twice a year (in December and May), and may perform with the YWCP training choirs one time in March. Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco (YWCP) began in 2012 with an advanced, young women’s chorus conducted by Dr. Susan McMane. Since then, three more training choirs as well as one non-auditioned singing class have been added. This introductory level, non-auditioned singing class focuses on developing a love and joy for singing in our youngest girls. Dr. McMane would like to meet with interested choral music educators who possess a positive attitude and enthusiasm for teaching young children.

Required qualifications

• Love of children and the ability to nurture the love of singing in each child

• Bachelor of Music (required) MM (preferred)

• In depth knowledge of age appropriate folksongs, singing games, and unison choral repertoire

HeadsUp!
